Using this "indirect" method of getting information into Endnote at least
means more information can be accessed and gleaned from the BIDS site,
compared to the "direct" method below using the connection file which is
very
limited in the information that it searches and retrieves (hence the
improvements that need to be made and the info needed from other
sources).

In order to access the services you will need an ATHENS username which has
authorisation to access these services.
With the change from Web of Science to Web of Knowledge in August
2003, the best advice is always to search from within Web of
Science (it's still there inside Web of Knowledge!) and then use
"Export to reference software" to import into EndNote, as you can get
a much more sophisticated search strategy that way. The WoS connection
file supplied with EndNote is, I think, still to the US one which is
not what people want.

Z39.50 Connections
(Top of page)
Z39.50 enables web references to be downloaded directly into Endnote without
needing an
intermediate file
If you are unable to connect to any of the free services stated in
the Endnote
manual see the details below in the Web of Science (Web
of Knowledge) section. The error
message for all states that the log in has been timed out - both on dial
up and ethernet connections.
Response:
For EndNote 5 you must have Internet Explorer version 4 or later
installed
on your computer for the http-based connections to work.
The EndNote 5 manual's instructions for configuring the connection
file via
a proxy server are wrong (in the first printing of the manual). Users
should *NOT* have to modify the connection file in order to use
either
PubMed or
WOS through a proxy server.
If Internet Explorer is configured for use with a proxy server, the
http-based connections should simply work.
27 January 2004: This is some information to help you with
queries
related to Endnote,
accessing the Bristol catalogue via Z39.50 , Blackboard and Web of Science
since
the upgrade to 15.2.4.
Endnote: The port has changed from 9929 to 9909.
Blackboard and Web of Science
The syntax to link to individual records is as follows:
http://www.lib.bristol.ac.uk/F?func=find-c&ccl;_term=ISBN=0198559615
(book record)
http://www.lib.bristol.ac.uk/F?func=find-c&ccl;_term=ISSN=0276-7333
(journal record)
Information on improved functionalities and known problems about the new
catalogue can be found on

(you may
need to use Refresh or Ctrl+Refresh to see the changes)
Response:
EndNote 5 is the first version of EndNote to have a connection file
for Web of Knowledge
or CCC.
EndNote 4 and 5 also have direct download ability from Web of
Science,
Current Contents, BIOSIS, and OVID into EndNote. After doing a search
for
the records you want (eg. AT THE WOS SITE), mark them, and then click
on
the "Export" button.
EndNote should start automatically and ask into which library you
want to
import the data.
Success may also be determined by
what version of
Windows you are using, network or
standalone, the browser and version you use, if you are accessing the
internet via a proxy server/firewall, (specific error messages) -
to import records from
NISS/Ovid Biomed PsycINFO:
1/ Connect to PsycINFO via NISS, not through EndNote itself.
2/ Run your search.
3/ Save it to a floppy -- Choose the following options:
Fields: Complete Reference
Citation Format: Direct Export
4/Open up your EndNote Library
5/Click on File and then choose Import (NOT Import Filters)
6/Change the Import Option by clicking on the down arrow at the
end of this box. Choose Other Filters. You will then see a long
list. If you
select
the logical choice: PsycINFO Ovid you find
that only the journal references were imported.
If you try PsycFIRST Ovid filter
all were imported, including dissertations and
books. So, use PsycFIRST Ovid.
7/ Choose the File -- the one on your floppy
8/ Click on Import
9/ A box should appear listing the references about to be imported,
so that you can check them, modify whatever.
10/Close the box and they should appear in your Library.
The instructions are on p.p 116-125 of the EndNote 5 manual.
Perform your search at the BIDS-IBSS site, mark the records as
appropriate,
EXPAND them, select the "email the results to yourself" option, as full
records and more importantly in DOWNLOADING format. "Export" the emailed
results as a text file to a folder/the desktop etc. on your system.

Question: Can I search any version of the Web of Science through
EndNote 5?
Answer: EndNote 5 includes a connection file for the ISI Web
of
Science
V4.3.2 (scheduled for release the week of June 18). This connection
file
will not work with the earlier versions of WoS.
Those users who are currently accessing the Web of Science on any of
the
ISI hosted servers need not change anything. The default settings
should
work for you.
27 Sep: Access to the ISI Web of Science
Service from EndNote5 is now working. Please see the settings required
at:
wos.mimas.ac.uk
where Your server address is the address of the local server
where
your
institution's Web of Science V4.3.2 is installed
YourPath?GWVersion=2&SrcAuth=ISIResearchSoft&SrcApp=EndNote
whereYour Path is
the
path to where your institution's copy of the ISI Gateway V2.5
software
resides.
For example, if Your Path were "gateway/gateway.cgi" then the Custom
string
should read:
gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcAuth=ISIResearchSoft&SrcApp=EndNote&DestApp=WOS

The EndNote 5 connection files will currently work with the Web of
Science.
However, in the UK or other countries you may need to edit the
connection
file to connect to your local Web of Science server. The connection
file
that ships with EndNote 5 connects to the main WoS server in
Philadelphia,
and that server is probably going to recognize your IP address or
passwords.
To edit the server address in the connection file
The problem with ALL of the connection files timing out sounds like you
are
hitting a firewall and/or proxy. The PubMed and ISI Web of Science
connection files use the http protocol and port 80, just like your web
browser. All of the other connection files use the z39.50 protocol and
various other ports, with the most popular ports being 210 and 7090.
and then open the Web of Science file for
editing.
To go through a firewall you will need to have your network
administrator
"open" that port for you. Your adminstrator may have
all the ports you need to use blocked. So the difficult part of the
solution for most connection files is talking your network administrator
into giving you access.
The PubMed and Web of Science files interaction with your proxy is more
complicated. EndNote 5 uses the information stored in your Windows
Internet
Options settings to negotiate its way through your proxy. For these
settings to work properly you must--
Additional details to what's documented: EndNote uses
the IE proxy settings, so you need to configure IE with the autoconfig
URL. Secondly, because EndNote is not a web browser, you may need to
request the proxy password separately; use the form at
https://wwws.cse.bris.ac.uk/cgi-bin/cacheauth.pl
for this.
